Brain health is a vital part of overall well-being as we age. Research suggests the best way to boost memory and reduce dementia risk is through engaging in a variety of activities that nourish and challenge our brains.
There’s evidence that engaging in diverse cognitive tasks — such as playing certain games, reading, or learning new skills — can stimulate neural connections, boost cognitive reserve, and foster neuroplasticity.
How Using Your Brain Builds Cognitive Reserve and Neuroplasticity
Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to be agile, solve problems, take on challenges, and resist injury due to trauma, stroke, or aging. Although researchers don’t totally understand how a person gets or improves on “brain resilience,” it seems to be a combination of the brain we were born with and how we do — or don’t — use it.[1]
“It appears that by cognitively challenging yourself, you can expand your cognitive reserve,” says Shehroo Pudumjee, PhD, neuropsychologist at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas.
Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to form and modify neural connections. Improving or maintaining neuroplasticity can help in times of injury or disease and in learning and assimilating new information.
Continuing to learn and engage in activities can build on the advantages of neuroplasticity, which keeps the brain healthy and might limit the effects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, says Dr. Pudumjee.
Why Variety Is Best When It Comes to Exercising Your Brain
There’s probably no single brain exercise or game that on its own will prevent you from ever getting dementia, says Justin Miller, PhD, professor of neurology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a neurologist at UW Medicine in Seattle.
“The way that I approach things, when I work with patients, is to look at the collective influence of all the different things that together can make a positive impact on keeping the brain healthy,” says Dr. Miller.
That means that engaging in a variety of different activities to challenge your brain is your best bet for maintaining cognitive function over the long run.
10 Brain Games, Activities, and Exercises to Try
Games and exercises that improve or maintain brain health must continually challenge you, says Jessica Caldwell, PhD, director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention and Research Center at Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas.
In other words, playing the same apps and video games over and over again “on autopilot” is not going to do a whole lot to build cognitive reserve or improve neuroplasticity.
“If you don’t have to think too hard, and you are just engaging at a light level, that’s not the level we really need to protect our brains, which is a challenge level,” says Dr. Caldwell.
And finally, pick activities and hobbies that you like or that truly interest you.
“That way, you’re more likely to stick with it,” she says.
Ready to fire up those neurons? Here are 10 games, exercises, and activities that may help to improve and maintain your brain health and memory.
1. Language Apps Like Duolingo or Babbel
Learning a new language “checks all the boxes” when it comes to stimulating your brain in all the right ways to keep it healthy.
“When you are learning a new language, you have to be able to pull up information from memory about different vocabulary words and you have to link things together with how you learned other types of language,” says Caldwell.
That gives you multiple ways to challenge the brain at the same time, she says.
Not to mention that if you take the next step and begin to meet other people (or even travel internationally) to try out your new language skills, you’re adding socialization to the list of beneficial effects.
“That offers human connection and potentially new relationships, which is also good for the brain and overall well-being, says Miller.
2. Chess, Anyone?
If the TV show The Queen’s Gambit made you chess-curious, great news: It’s a solid option for keeping your brain active, because the game is complex, and you can’t really just go through the motions while playing, Miller says.
“And although you can play chess on an app or your computer, you can also join a chess group and play against different people, which provides a social element — always a bonus,” says Miller.
There’s also observational evidence that people who engage in games like chess may be less likely to develop dementia compared to people who don’t play those kinds of games.[2]
3. Release Your Inner Musician
Learning to play an instrument is one of the top recommendations that Caldwell gives her patients.
“It’s typically challenging for most people, and it also involves a number of different cognitive functions all coming together, which might be why it’s so good for the brain. To learn an instrument, you have to look, perceive, remember, and use your hands all at the same time,” she says.
A systematic review of three studies found that playing an instrument was significantly associated with a decreased risk of developing dementia later.[3]
4. Bridge and Other Card Games
Complex card games like bridge are definitely helpful for the brain; it’s quite challenging to learn and to play — and to play well, says Caldwell.
“Whether it is computerized or live or in person, it can challenge the brain,” she says.
The same study that found benefits for chess found a similar reduction in dementia risk for those who played card games like bridge.[2]
5. Join the Pickleball Craze (or Learn Any New Sport)
“If you are thinking about doing one thing to support your brain health for life, exercise is always a good choice, because it has both direct brain impact as well indirect effects that are great for your mood, your heart health, and many other areas of health as well,” says Caldwell.
Hundreds if not thousands of studies have shown a link between different types and levels of aerobic activity and a reduction in dementia risk.[4]
And if you happen to get really passionate (or slightly obsessed) about pickleball or another sport, that may even help your brain health more. Having a stronger sense of life purpose is associated with a healthy brain, says Miller.
6. Never Stop Learning
Taking a class at your local university or senior center, or even online, can be a great way to boost your memory.
Adult literacy activities, such as taking a class, was associated with the greatest reduction in dementia risk — an estimated 9 to 11 percent risk reduction — in an observational study on how different activities impact the brain.[2]
7. Discover a New Hobby (or Two)
Trying out a new activity in your leisure time isn’t just fun and games: It can also help reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.
Research has shown that taking up a hobby in mid-life and late life was associated with a lower risk of dementia in people without a history of stroke, compared to people with no new hobbies.[5]
The authors theorize the benefits may come from a higher engagement in life or life purpose, as well as the heart health benefits of hobbies that have a physical component, like golf or social dancing.
There’s also evidence that creative hobbies like woodworking, knitting, or painting may reduce dementia risk.[2]
8. Do Some Mental Math
Ready to guess how much the groceries in your cart cost? Or maybe how much tip to leave your server without using the “cheat sheet” on the bottom of the check?
Figuring out math problems without the aid of a pencil, paper, or calculator may feel like walking a tightrope without a net, but it’s good for challenging your brain. You can always double-check your answers with one of these tools after you do your mental math.
There’s even some research to suggest that solving math problems has a positive effect on participants’ cognition.[6]
9. Tai Chi in the Park
“Tai chi is a good example of an activity that gets people moving. It's doing something other than sitting on the couch and watching TV, and so I would say that there's going to be benefits for the brain to some degree,” says Miller.
If practiced a few times a week along with other brain-strengthening activities, tai chi might help reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life, he says.
If you practice the ancient art outside, even better. There’s evidence that time spent in natural outdoor environments leads to increases in cognition similar to what you get from exercising. Doing both at once might have an even better affect.[7]
10. Trivia, Anyone?
Do former Jeopardy! champions have better brain health? There hasn’t been a study on that (yet), but playing trivia with friends or heading to your local pub for trivia night could have some brain boosting benefits.
Continuing to actively learn new information — especially if it’s through reading — is good for the brain, says Miller.
And joining a social club or group (like a trivia team) can connect you to other people and help improve your emotional well-being — and that's equally as important as brain health, he adds.
Are Brain Training Apps and Websites Good for the Brain?
While there are lots of computer games and apps that promise to enhance cognitive function, there isn’t any definitive research that shows these products have significant neurological benefits for older adults.
A meta-analysis found that while computer cognition training was associated with small, short-term cognitive benefits, there’s not enough high-quality research to support the use of brain games for preventing dementia or improving long-term cognitive function.[8]
“These games are typically about one type of thing: You are either getting faster, or you are trying to remember more things, or learning more math,” says Caldwell.
If you are finding ways to be continually challenged by these games or apps, they could have value, but you can usually get the same types of challenges (or even better ones) from books, non-computer-based games with other people, or listening to a podcast on a new and challenging subject, she says.
The other issue is that these games are usually played while sitting down.
“That’s okay for short periods of time, but generally, the more time you can be up and active and not in front of a screen, the better for your brain,” says Miller.

Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen (Hebrew: אֱלִיָּהוּ בֵּן שָׁאוּל כֹּהֵן, Arabic: إيلياهو بن شاؤول كوهين; 6 December 1924 – 18 May 1965) was an Egyptian-born Israeli spy. He is best known for his espionage work in Syria between 1961 and 1965, where he developed close relationships with the Syrian political and military hierarchy.[1][2][3]
Though he was initially successful, his activity became increasingly risky and he expressed a sense of impending danger to Mossad in 1964. A year later, Cohen's true allegiance was uncovered by Syrian intelligence and he was convicted by the Syrian government under pre-war martial law. After being sentenced to death, he was publicly hanged in Damascus in May 1965. The incident contributed to the sharp escalation of hostilities between Israel and Syria just before the 1967 Arab–Israeli War.
He is highly regarded in Israel, with several streets and roads being named after him.
Early life
Cohen was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to a family of Mizrahi Jews. His father had immigrated from Aleppo in the Ottoman Empire in 1914. Deeply committed to Judaism, Cohen had planned in his youth to become a rabbi with guidance from Moise Ventura [he] (1893–1978), Alexandria's Chief Rabbi,[4] but the city's yeshiva soon closed down,[5] prompting him to pursue higher education at Cairo University. A staunch Zionist, he helped Israel evacuate the Egyptian Jewish community by assisting Israeli intelligence throughout Egypt. He was also fluent in five languages: Arabic, Hebrew, English, French, and Spanish.
Onset of the Arab–Israeli conflict
At the onset of the Jewish exodus from the Muslim world, which began concurrently with the Arab–Israeli conflict, Cohen's parents and three brothers immigrated to Israel in 1949, but he stayed behind to complete his degree and also to help consolidate Zionist efforts among Egypt's Jewish community. Prior to the 1952 Egyptian Revolution, he was arrested and interrogated by Egyptian authorities, who were becoming suspicious of his activities.
Nonetheless, he continued to engage in various Israeli covert efforts in Egypt throughout the 1950s, although the Egyptian government could never prove his involvement in Operation Goshen, by which the Israeli government smuggled a significant number of Egypt's Jews out of the country and resettled them in Israel amidst spiking rates of government-backed Egyptian antisemitism.[8] Cohen is also said to have aided Egyptian Jews who were taking part in what would become known as the Lavon Affair, by which Israel sought to sabotage Egypt's relationship with the Western world. Two members of the spy ring were caught and sentenced to death, but the Egyptian government was unable to find a link between Cohen and the perpetrators.
Emigration from Egypt
By December 1956, just after the Suez Crisis, he was forced to leave Egypt; his immigration to Israel was facilitated by the Jewish Agency. In 1959, he married Nadia Majald (born c. 1935),[10] an Iraqi-born Jew with whom he would have three children (Sophie, Irit, and Shai) after settling down in Bat Yam.[11] Through this marriage, Cohen became the brother-in-law of Israeli author Sami Michael.
Career
The Israel Defense Forces recruited him in 1957 and placed him in military intelligence, where he became a counter-intelligence analyst and a translator.[13]: 63 His work bored him and he attempted to join the Mossad, but he was offended when the Mossad rejected him, and he resigned from military counter-intelligence. For the next two years, he worked as a filing clerk in a Tel Aviv insurance office.
Enlistment with Mossad
The Mossad recruited Cohen after Director-General Meir Amit, looking for an intelligence officer to infiltrate the Syrian government, came across his name while looking through the agency's files of rejected candidates, after none of the current candidates seemed suitable for the job. For two weeks Cohen was put under surveillance and was judged suitable for recruitment and training. Cohen was then informed that Mossad had decided to recruit him and underwent an intensive six-month course at the Mossad training school. His graduate report stated that he had all the qualities needed to become a katsa, or field agent.
Espionage in Syria
He was then given a false identity as a Syrian businessman who was returning to the country after living in Argentina. To establish his cover, Cohen moved to Buenos Aires in 1961.[13]: In Buenos Aires he moved among the Arab community, letting it be known he had large amounts of money to put at the disposal of the Syrian Ba'ath Party. At this time the Ba'ath Party was illegal in Syria but the party seized power in 1963.

Cohen moved to Damascus in February 1962 under the alias Kamel Amin Thabet (Arabic: كامل أمين ثابت).[17][18] Mossad had carefully planned the tactics that he was to use in building relationships with high-ranking Syrian politicians, military officials, influential public figures, and the diplomatic community.[9]
Cohen continued his social life as he had in Argentina, spending time in cafes listening to political gossip. He also held parties at his home for high-placed Syrian ministers, businessmen, and others. At these parties, Cohen "dispensed free-flowing liquor and prostitutes"[1] and highly-placed officials would openly discuss their work and army plans. Cohen would pretend to be drunk to encourage such conversations, to which he paid close attention. He would also lend money to government officials, and many came to him for advice.[4]
Cohen provided an extensive amount and wide range of intelligence data for the Israeli Army between 1961 and 1965. He sent intelligence to Israel by radio, secret letters, and occasionally in person; he secretly travelled to Israel three times.[8] His most famous achievement was the tour of the Golan Heights in which he collected intelligence on the Syrian fortifications there. According to an unconfirmed but widely believed story, he feigned sympathy for the soldiers exposed to the sun and had trees planted at every position, placed to provide shade. The Israel Defense Forces were alleged to have used the trees as targeting markers during the Six-Day War, which enabled Israel to capture the Golan Heights in two days.[19] Cohen made repeated visits to the southern frontier zone, providing photographs and sketches of Syrian positions.[20] He also learned of a secret plan to create three successive lines of bunkers and mortars; the Israel Defense Forces would otherwise have expected to encounter only a single line. Cohen was able to find out that the Syrians planned to divert the Jordan River headwaters in an attempt to deprive Israel of water resources, providing information to Israeli forces that enabled them to destroy the equipment prepared for the task during the "War over Water".[23] It is claimed that the intelligence that Cohen gathered before his arrest was an important factor in Israel's success in the Six-Day War,[24] although some intelligence experts have argued that the information he provided about the Golan Heights fortifications was also readily available from ground and aerial reconnaissance.
A 2018 article published in Newsweek by Ronen Bergman excerpted from Bergman's book Rise and Kill First, says that Eli Cohen located Alois Brunner, a former Nazi official and Holocaust perpetrator suspected of living in Syria, and relayed the information to an Israeli intelligence unit that subsequently sent letter bombs to Brunner.[25][26]
Discovery
Following the 1963 Syrian coup d'état, newly appointed Syrian Intelligence Colonel Ahmed Suidani disliked Cohen and did not trust figures close to the Second Syrian Republic. Cohen expressed fear of discovery to the Mossad on his last secret visit to Israel in November 1964, and he stated that he wished to terminate his assignment in Syria. The purposes of that visit were to pass on intelligence and to enable him to witness the birth of his third child. Despite this, however, Israeli intelligence asked him to return to Syria one more time. Before leaving, Cohen assured his wife it would be his last trip before he returned home permanently.[7]
In January 1965, Syrian officials, who used Soviet-made tracking equipment and were assisted by Soviet experts, increased their efforts to find a high-level spy. They observed a period of radio silence, in the hope that any illegal transmissions could be identified. They successfully detected radio transmissions and were able to triangulate the transmitter. Syrian security services led by Suidani broke into Cohen's apartment on 24 January and claimed to have caught him in the middle of a transmission to Israel.[8]
Death

Cohen was found guilty of espionage by a military tribunal and sentenced to death under martial law. He had been repeatedly interrogated and tortured.[7][9]
Israel staged an international campaign for clemency, hoping to persuade Syria to not execute him. Israeli foreign minister Golda Meir led a campaign urging Damascus to consider the consequences of hanging him. Diplomats, prime ministers, parliamentarians, and Pope Paul VI tried to intercede. Meir even appealed to the Soviet Union.[9] The governments of Belgium, Canada, and France tried to persuade the Syrian government to commute the death sentence,[27] but the Syrians refused. Nadia Cohen attempted to appeal for clemency at the Syrian Embassy in Paris but was turned away. Cohen wrote in his final letter on 15 May 1965:[7]
I am begging you, my dear Nadia, not to spend your time in weeping about something already passed. Concentrate on yourself, looking forward for a better future!
Cohen was publicly hanged in the Marjeh Square in Damascus on 18 May 1965. The execution was recorded on 35 mm film. On the day of his execution, his last wish to see a rabbi was respected by the prison authorities, and Nissim Indibo, the elderly Chief Rabbi of Syria, accompanied him in the truck. He was also allowed to write a final letter to his wife.[9]
Burial

Syria refused to return Cohen's body to his family in Israel, and his wife Nadia sent a letter to Amin al-Hafiz in November 1965 asking his forgiveness for Cohen's actions and requesting his remains. In February 2007, Turkey offered to act as a mediator for their return.[28]
Monthir Maosily, the former bureau chief of Hafez Al-Assad, claimed in August 2008 that the Syrians had buried him three times to stop the remains from being taken back to Israel via a special operation.[29] Syrian authorities have repeatedly denied family requests for the remains. Cohen's brothers Abraham and Maurice led a campaign to return his remains; Maurice died in 2006, and Nadia now leads it.[14][17]
In 2016, a Syrian group calling itself "Syrian art treasures" posted a video on Facebook showing Cohen's body after his execution. No film or video was previously known to exist of the execution.[30] The press announced on 5 July 2018 that Cohen's wristwatch had been retrieved from Syria. His widow mentioned that the watch was up for sale months earlier, and Mossad managed to capture it.[31] Mossad director Yossi Cohen presented it to Cohen's family in a ceremony, and it is currently on display at Mossad headquarters.[32]
Legacy
Cohen has become a national hero in Israel, and many streets and neighbourhoods have been named for him. Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Defense Minister Ezer Weizmann, Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur, and several Mossad operatives all attended his son's Bar Mitzvah in 1977.[33] A memorial stone has been erected to Cohen in the Garden of the Missing Soldiers in Mount Herzl, Jerusalem.[34]
John Shea played Cohen in the television film The Impossible Spy (1987),[35] and Sacha Baron Cohen played him in the Netflix miniseries The Spy (2019).[36]
The Israeli settlement Eliad on the Golan Heights is named after him.

How to type language accent marks on your keyboard
Using Microsoft Word & Office apps (Shortcut Keys) There are handy shortcut keys
on most modern PCs and laptops loaded with Microsoft Word and Office apps.
They’re fast to use, and the key combos aren’t too complicated. Here are the
main ones to remember: Grave accent (à): Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl)
on the bottom-left of your keyboard and the Accent key (`) near the top-left
together. Release the keys, and then choose the letter you want to add the grave
accent to. Acute accent (é): Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl) and the
Apostrophe key (') near the Enter key together. Let go of the keys, then select
the letter. Circumflex accent (û): Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl), the
Shift key just above, and then tap 6 near the top row. Release the keys and pick
your letter. Tilde accent (ñ): Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl), the Shift
key, and then the Accent key (`) together.
Let go of the keys and choose the
letter you want. Umlaut accent (ü): Press and hold the Control key (Ctrl), the
Shift key, and the Colon key (:) just next to the Apostrophe key. Release the
keys and type the letter you need. Uppercase accented letters (Ä): If you want
to add any of the accents above to uppercase letters, follow the same steps but

the Windows Character Map is the easiest way to get accented letters. Here's how
to find it: Open the Windows Start menu at the bottom-left of your taskbar
(Windows logo). Type "character map" into the search field and click on the app
that appears at the top. The character map screen will be displayed on your
screen. Just click on the accented letter you need. You'll then need to click on
the Select button. This’ll put the accented letter you want in the empty field
at the bottom of the Character Map. Click the Copy button to get the accented
letter on your clipboard, which you can then paste anywhere you want. Learning
Windows Alt Key Codes (ASCII Code) There's also another method for Windows and
Microsoft Office users. To use Alt Key Codes though, you'll need a numeric
keypad on the right side of your keyboard. Sorry laptop users — you probably
won't have this! But if you're using a desktop keyboard, here's what you'll need
to do: Hold the Alt key down. All the following codes start with you holding

computer? No problem, just change the Language Pack. This'll let you view menus,
dialogue boxes, and more in your chosen language. You can even change your
keyboard layout and fonts too. If you want to do this, follow these steps: Open
the Windows Start menu at the bottom-left of your taskbar (Windows logo). Select
'Settings' (gear icon), then click on 'Time & language' on the bottom-left of

down to the 'Preferred languages' section. Click on 'Add a language' and choose
a language to install. There are loads! Using an Apple Mac computer (Accent

How to sort data by multiple columns in Excel
Sorts are a simple task in Microsoft Excel if all you need is an ascending or descending sort. Excel is smart enough that it can interpret the data range. Not all sorts are so easy. Fortunately, Excel offers two types of custom sorts: by irregular terms and by multiple columns. The recent article, How to create a custom sort when a regular sort won’t do in Excel, shows you how to create a unique list of sorting elements, such as Monday, Tuesday and so on, or Small, Medium and Large. In this article, I’ll show you how to sort by multiple columns. For instance, you might want to sort a sales sheet by personnel and then region. The end result groups the personnel and then further groups each of those groups by region.
There are two ways to initiate a custom sort:
On the Home tab, click Sort in the Editing group and click Custom Sort.
On the Data tab, click Sort in the Sort & Filter group.
Please use whichever you prefer throughout the article.
I’m using Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but you can use older versions. For your convenience, you can download the demonstration .xlsx and .xls files. Excel Online supports sorting by multiple columns.
How to sort by two columns
Grouping is a common database task, and sorting by multiple columns is essentially the same thing. You have a primary sort on a specific column and then a secondary sort within the results of the primary sort. You’re not limited to two columns either, but we’ll keep the examples simple.
We’ll sort by personnel and region.
You can sort by personnel or region, but using the Sort options alone, you can’t sort by both. In this case, you need to build a custom sort as follows:
Click anywhere inside the data set, preferably in the Personnel column, but doing so isn’t necessary.
In the Editing group (on the Home tab), click the Sort & Filter option, and choose Custom Sort from the dropdown list.
If you clicked inside the Personnel column, the first Sort By setting in the result dialog should be Personnel. If you didn’t, choose Personnel now. The Sort On and Order options should be set to Cell Values and A To Z, respectively because these are the default settings. If necessary, make changes.
At this point, you’ve satisfied the primary sort. To build the secondary sort, click the Add Level option.
From the Then By dropdown, choose Region. Again, the Sort On and Order columns should be set to the defaults, Cell Values and A To Z (Figure A).
Now you have both sort columns set, so click OK to execute the sort.
As you can see in Figure B, Excel groups the names in the Personnel column in an ascending alphabetic sort. Then, the regions are sorted within each name group. James has three regions, Central Northwest, and Southwest. Then, drop down to Martha and Rosa. Their region groups are the same, Northwest and Southwest.
How to add a third column to sort in Excel
There are very few repeated dates, but there are a few repeated months. Let’s create a new custom sort on three columns: Date, Personnel and Region. To do so, we’ll first have to add a helper column—one that returns the month. To do so, insert a column between Date and Value, enter the following function in C3 and copy it to the remaining cells:

In the Editing group (on the Home tab), click the Sort & Filter option, and choose Custom Sort from the dropdown list.
If you clicked inside the Date column, the first Sort By setting in the result dialog should be Date. If you didn’t before, choose Date now. The Sort On and Order options should be set to Cell Values and Oldest To Newest, respectively. If necessary, make those changes.
At this point, you’ve satisfied the primary sort. To build the secondary sort, click the Add Level option.
From the Then By dropdown, choose Personnel. Again, the Sort On and Order columns should be set to the defaults, Cell Values and A To Z.
Click Add Level, choose Region from the Then By dropdown (Figure C), and click OK to execute the sort.

The data set is simple on purpose so you can easily discern the different groups as a result of the multiple column sorts. For each group, simply add a new sort level.
